Bike Lanes for the Boulevards is an effort being led by the City of South San Francisco to improve walking and biking conditions along Westborough Boulevard and Junipero Serra Boulevard, including key connections near Interstate 280. Westborough Boulevard and Junipero Serra Boulevard are critical routes that connect neighborhoods, schools, shopping centers, and transit stops. Currently these roads have limited sidewalks and bike facilities, steep grades, and intersections that are challenging for people to cross safely. The goals of the project include:
Improve safety for people walking, biking, and driving along Westborough and Junipero Serra Boulevards
Close gaps in the pedestrian and bicycle network to provide continuous and comfortable routes
Enhance connections to schools, parks, shopping areas, and transit stops
Support sustainable transportation and livability
After completing the Feasibility Study in 2024, the project is in its next phase, which will refine the design concepts, conduct traffic studies, coordinate with Caltrans on interchange improvements, and engage with local residents, property owners, and organizations to ensure the design reflects local needs.
Project Location
The project focuses on four connected segments of roadway:
Junipero Serra Boulevard between Hickey Boulevard and Avalon Drive
Westborough Boulevard (West) from Skyline Boulevard to the I-280 interchange
Westborough Boulevard (East) from the I-280 interchange to Antoinette Lane
I-280/Westborough Boulevard Interchange – improving crossings and connectivity between the east and west sides of the freeway
